Kakanj

Municipality of Kakanj houses central place in the Sarajevo - Zenica valley, economically the most important and the most densely inhabited region in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Railway Doboj-Sarajevo-Ploce and highway Sarajevo – Zenica – Doboj connects Kakanj with other parts of the country and Europe.
Municipality of Kakanj covers the area of 417 km², which is inhabited with 46000 inhabitants. The area is rich in coal ore that enabled building of Thermo – electricity power plant, which is the biggest one in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is well developed wood and cement industry in Kakanj.
Today, Kakanj is a modern town where everything is alive and accelerated economic development, which beside of all that kept rich cultural and historic tradition and hospitality of its inhabitants. Beside rich heritage Kakanj also can offer to all his visitors plenty of interesting and nice sites and places.
19 km distanced from Kakanj, about 1144 m above sea level, there is Ponijeri, well-known weekend resort, which is also a spa, a winter centre, and hunting start point. In the nearby there flow creeks and crystal clean rivers rich in fish. These rivers are Marosicka, Mala Rijeka, Trstionica, Ribnica and Bukovica.
There are many establishments like cafés, bars, restaurants, motels and hotels that offer good domestic specialties, comfort rooms and other tourist attractions
